Aluminium coffee tamper. Tamping coffee is a key step in making a fine espresso coffee, as it creates the right resistance to the water pressure. To give ground coffee the right level of compactness and evenness, a good coffee tamper should have four key features: the weight of the tamper should be balanced very low; the handle should be comfortable and secure to grip; the shape of the tamper should assist the tamping action—a mushroom shape is best; the shape and diameter of the base need to be right for the type of filter used.
